Buying Guidelines for Ink Cartridge replacement
The Cost Factor
The primary factor in buying ink or toner is the cost of the toner/cartridge/ink. This cost factor is what makes the printer manufacturer to extend refill cartridges with special offers. This is also the reason why there are cheaper compatible ink cartridges made by other companies (other than the Original Equipment manufacturer). The really cheaper method is to refill the cartridge by ink which is laborious and messy and depends on the construction of the cartridge.
Type of Ink & Machine
Type of ink should be taken into consideration. Inks are aqueous, dye-based or pigment based. Therefore cost and life of the printout will differ. Replacement cost of the cartridges too will differ. It also depends on the type of machine you have, whether it is a all-purpose one, a fax cum printer, etc. Some machine will have ink tanks instead of cartridges.
Printing Purpose
Inks are also manufactured according to the purpose. Therefore one can get black ink cartridges for mass volume daily printing like that used for documents. On the other end is the special glossy prints for photographic reproduction which are expensive and specialised. So buying ink cartridge depends on the user and the work. one has to work out the cost and purpose of the prints in consideration. Literature of the manufacturer should be carefully read too. The claim of the maximum number of prints from one cartridge should be examined. Yield should be verified whether it is a test print from the printer or just text printed on a full page.
Compatible Cartridges or Consumables
Generally the OE manufacturer will recommend his own or a particular brand emphasising the quality and the life of the print-head/printer. But there are many compatible ink cartridges available from other manufacturers, which after detailed enquiry and carefully considering reliability factors can be used. Re-manufactured / refurbished cartridges too are available.
Printhead Life
Printhead is the chip used for controlling the printing process. Another consideration to the purchase of the ink or toner is the print-head life. One must evaluate the cost of replacement of the print-head in case of wear and tear or damage. If the printer head is costly, utmost care must be taken. It is always advisable to buy the recommended ink cartridge from the OE manufacturer. Sometimes, it maybe cheaper to get a new printer than replacing the printhead. If the print-head is not very expensive then compatible ink cartridges can be used for replacement and cost savings.
Shelf Life
Check out the shelf life of the ink or toner to optimise your purchase cycle. Sometimes replacement will be affected if the printer is obsolete. Sealed packaging of cartridges toners can give 6 to 12 months of life.
