Glossary

Banding:
Banding happens when the inkjet cartridge cannot give a gradual pattern of a color instead it gives a blend of different colors which appear as a band of discrete colors.

Bitmap:
A type of image file represented by a 2-D array of brightness values for pixels.

Bleeding:
This condition generally happens when there is an overflow of ink from the cartridge or the paper has more absorbent capacity, as a result, the adjacent colors run and merge into one another.

Bubble Jet:
The bubble jet is the way in which the droplet of ink oozes out of the ink cartridge. It is a technology developed by canon where the ink is heated and as a result bubbles are produced which expands and ejects the ink out of the inkjet nozzle.

Cartridge:
The cartridge is the actual container that holds the ink. Usually this cartridge has a sponge kind of substance which holds the ink.

CMYK:
This is the Cyan Magenta Yellow Black model. These are the standard colors used in ink jet printing.

Composite Black:
The composite black is the creation of black color from the cyan, magenta and yellow colors. Usually such a creation provides a muddy black and not the pure black. So this is the reason why CMYK model is used for creation of wide range of colors.

Diffuse Dither:
Diffuse dither is the process of printing continuous tone images. In this process the greyscale images are printed on the paper by randomly placing dots which finally forms the image.

Dithering:
Dithering is also called as half toning method. This method gives the impression of producing a large color spectrum. This is caused by printing several primary colors in various patterns.

Driver:
A software which comes with the printer for the installation of the device to the computer.

Dye-Sublimation:
A technology that is used for the applications that require continuous tone output. They are used for demanding graphic and photographic applications.

Feathering:
The feathering describes the printed text quality on the paper. In this process, the ink follows the paper contour. In general depending on the viscosity of the paper, the feathering will be more pronounced if the grain of the paper is rougher.

Generic Toner Kit:
The Generic Toner kit can be said as the copy of the OEM toner kit. This is generally manufactured by a third party manufacturer in accordance with the OEM specifications.

Halftone:
The half tone is the way of producing images by turning certain dots on and off during printing. This creates an illusion of continuous tone as the dots repeat regularly.

HP:
HP is the abbreviation Hewlett Packard. It is a multinational company which manufacture desktops, laptops, servers etc. They are said to be the king-pins of printers manufacturing.

Ink:
The ink is a liquid which is stored in the cartridge and is used for printing. These are either dye based or water based.

Inkjet Printer:
A printer that prints by projecting electrically charged droplets of ink.

Jet:
The jet is present in the inkjet cartridges that are nothing but the nozzle through which the ink flows.

Jet Pak:
A system that is used to recycle the ink cartridge

Laser Printer:
An electrostatic printer that focuses laser beam to form the character/images which are electro-statically transferred to the printer medium which is mostly a paper.

Nozzle:
This is the vital area on the inkjet cartridge which needs to be cleaned more often and these tiny nozzle allows the heated ink bubble to ooze out onto the paper.

OEM:
OEM is the abbreviation of Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Parallel Port:
Parallel port is an I/O channel in the parallel devices like printers. Through these ports the data are sent and received at the rate of 8 bits at a time in 8 separate wires.

PCL:
PCL is the abbreviation of Printer Control Language which was designed by HP. This is designed to allow the laptops, desktops and other PC’s to communicate with the laser printers.

PDL:
PDL is the abbreviation of Page Description Language. This describes the contents and layout of the page to be printed with laser printers. The 2 most widely used PDLs are the HP PCL and Adobe Post Script.

Print-alignment:
The print alignment is the proper alignment and setting of the nozzles and print head. Usually the alignment is done properly with the device driver itself.

Print Head:
It is the major part of the printer which contains the circuit for heating up the ink and oozing it out of the nozzle onto the paper. The printer head should not be touched with hands and should be touched with a clean cloth with solution applied to it.

Rendering:
Rendering involves the transfer of printing commands to raster image.

Virgin Cartridge:
This is the cartridge which is used can be used only once and cannot be recycled.
